Schiefergestein comes from vineyards of slate in Bockenau and Monger as well as younger vines from the grand cru of Felseneck, planted to soils of blue Devonian slate, basalt, and quarts. 25-30 year old vines. Essentially a "baby GG (Grosses Gewachs)".
Schiefergestein translates to Shale or Shale rock in German, and it is a very fitting name for this Cuvee, which is all about minerality. The crushed and wet stone here is so prominent with beautiful ripe orchard fruit and notes of wildflowers and mint. this has outstanding texture and the presence of fruit with vibrant acids and a mineral-driven finish. Laser-focused and precise, Tim Frolich equates this to the precision of Glashütte, a famous German watchmaker. This is magnificent and is one of the top values for Dry German Riesling. 94 points James Suckling
