  • The Herzánovi winery started as a small family affair in 1997 when Jakub and Zuzana’s father planted their first wines in Kobylí
  • The current generation took the helm of the family estate in 2012
  • Jakub and Sandra are both trained winemakers who met while studying at the winemaking college in the nearby Lednice
  • Part of the wines are made in Georgian qvevri, as a result of Jakub’s interest in maceration and its influence on wine
  • The trio are strong believers in biodynamics and count among the founders of the Czecho-Slovak Demeter group

a very savory and unique red blend from the Czech Republic

Vineyard: Subsoil is loess, on the top it differs a little bit in each vineyard – some are more sandy, some more humous. Planted 1990s, with south/southwest exposure.

bouquet of an ancient forest (think pine resin, tree bark, mushroom, undergrowth), brambly and wild black fruit, medium bodied, fine tannins, distinctive but not necessarily funky, great with a slight chill

region: Moravia, Czech Republic

varietal: 40% Dornfelder, 40% Blauer Portugieser and 20% Zweigelt

style: red

farming/cellar: practicing organic and biodynamic, Half of the grapes was pressed immediately, whole bunches (blanc de noir style), fermentation happened in oak barrels. The grapes were destemmed and fermentation happened 100% in open tanks, macerated, left on the skins for 3-4 weeks. Afterwards we pressed the macerated part and then it went to older french oak barrels (some 225l, some 400l, 4th, 5th use). After 12 months the wines are blended together. Unfined, unfiltered, with no added sulfur.
