salty volcanic Gruner from one of our fav. Hungarian estates (we recently featured their white blend in wine club)

On the southern slopes of the dormant volcano Csobánc lies Villa Tolnay, a historic estate formerly owned by the famous Hungarian actress Klari Tolnay. Csobánc is one of the “witness hills” that makes up the Badacsony wine region on the northern shores of Lake Balaton, and today is largely unpopulated despite its long history of winemaking. Philipp Oser purchased the property in 2004 and immediately recognized its potential for creating wines driven by the unique volcanic terroir.

This Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner) is from the Ráthonyi-Domb vineyard on Csobánc. Aromas of green apple, white pepper and spices are met with pear, grapefruit and pomelo on the palate. Firm body and lengthy finish, with a pronounced fresh acidity. Organic farming.

From Wine Enthusiast: “Scents of Seckel pear, quince, dried apricot and flint waft from the glass. Peach and honeydew flavors are joined by rosewater, nutmeg and vanilla bean notes that culminate in a vivid, spice- and flower-strewn finish.” (93 Points / Editor’s Choice, December 2023)
